Why is Russia attacking Ukraine? Here are the reasons.

Ukraine is world’s 45th largest country and Russia is world’s 1st largest country by area. So you got the difference right? In regards to Military Power Russia is considered 2nd in the world after USA. But Ukraine is far behind with 22nd rank. As Russia is attacking Ukraine, if there is no support coming for Ukraine from any supporting countries or NATO, it can be a disaster for Ukraine.

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union for most of the 20th century until 24 August 1991. That’s when Ukraine became an Independent country as the communist Supreme Soviet (parliament) of Ukraine proclaimed that Ukraine would no longer follow the USSR (Soviet Union) laws and will follow only the laws of the Ukrainian SSR, de facto.

Coming to the question, Why Russia lead by Putin is attacking Ukraine?

  • Ukraine joining NATO
  • Ukraine joining European Union
  • Chance for NATO Airbases in Ukraine , which can be threat to Russia

Russia has always resisted Ukraine’s move towards joining the European Union and the Western countries defensive military alliance NATO ( The North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Announcing Russia’s invasion, he accused “NATO” of threatening “our historic future as a nation”. Ukraine was preparing to formally apply for EU (European Union) membership in 2024, in order to join the European Union in the 2030s. Also Ukraine was moving fast towards joining the NATO. Fearing it could be surrounded by what it sees as hostile forces if Ukraine joins NATO, or moves any closer to the West, the Kremlin (Putin) has demanded guarantees NATO will not accept it or other former members of the Soviet Republic. Western countries, and NATO, have dismissed such fears, but Putin is clearly not convinced by their statements.

Putin knows that the US and other western nations will think twice before deploying troops themselves as there is high risk of turning this conflict into a potentially global one and even it can turn to be a World War 3. The threat for Russia is a prolonged military operation if NATO or Ukraine supporting countries interfere, but that is something Putin can sustain almost indefinitely, if he is willing to pay the cost of keeping a large number of troops and equipment in the field.

While announcing the ‘military operation’, Putin said: “Whoever tries to interfere with us, and even more so to create threats for our country..Russia’s response will lead you to consequences you have never experienced in your history.”
