Congress Poised to Seize Kuttanad in 2026 Kerala Assembly Polls, Saji Joseph Kuttanad Emerges as Key Contender

Alappuzha: With the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections looming less than a year away, political fronts are scrambling to forge strategic alliances and finalize candidates. The battle for Kuttanad, Kerala’s iconic rice bowl, has emerged as a flashpoint, with the Congress party intensifying its bid to wrest the seat from its United Democratic Front (UDF) ally, the Kerala Congress Joseph Group (KCJ), which has failed to secure the constituency since 1987.

The Congress is leveraging its organizational strength and grassroots momentum to challenge KCJ’s hold on Kuttanad, capitalizing on the latter’s dwindling influence in Central Travancore. Plagued by repeated factional splits, aging leadership, and a shrinking cadre base, KCJ’s electoral relevance has waned, leaving it vulnerable to Congress’s aggressive takeover strategy. Political analysts view this as a calculated move by the Congress to consolidate its dominance within the UDF and reshape the power dynamics in Alappuzha.

Leading the Congress charge is Saji Joseph Kuttanad, a seasoned district-level leader and vice-president of the Alappuzha District Congress Committee.

A prominent figure in Kuttanad for over two decades, Joseph has built a reputation as a firebrand activist. His leadership in the 2017 mass agitation that forced the resignation of then-Transport Minister Thomas Chandy, a former Kuttanad MLA, over allegations of public property encroachment, cemented his stature as a relentless advocate for the region. Joseph’s 48-hour Satyagraha and his defiance in the face of police brutality during protests in Alappuzha captured widespread attention. In 2023, he again made headlines by spearheading a farmers’ movement against delayed paddy price disbursements, enduring another brutal police crackdown. These high-profile agitations have positioned Joseph as a formidable candidate, embodying Congress’s narrative of fighting for Kuttanad’s marginalized communities against entrenched interests.

The Congress is confident of a landslide victory in Kuttanad if it fields its own candidate, buoyed by a resolution passed earlier this year by both block committees in the constituency demanding the seat’s allocation to the party. Party insiders argue that Kuttanad’s voters are disillusioned with KCJ’s lackluster performance and are ready to embrace Congress’s vision for agricultural revival and economic upliftment in the region.

Meanwhile, KCJ is scrambling to protect its lone bastion in Alappuzha, warning that losing Kuttanad could jeopardize its political survival. Sources indicate KCJ is pushing for a seat-sharing deal, offering to cede Kuttanad in exchange for a Congress-held seat in Central Travancore.

However, given KCJ’s dismal electoral track record and diminished clout, Congress is unlikely to entertain such demands, viewing Kuttanad as a winnable prize to bolster its regional dominance.
